Perioperative Nursing Program for Licensed Practical Nurses
The performance-based Perioperative Nursing Program for Licensed Practical Nurses (PONP-LPN) prepares Licensed Practical Nurses for professional practice in the operating room. This post-graduate program for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provides specialized education in applying the nursing process throughout the different perioperative phases.
This exceptional program is offered in a part time format which is designed to meet the learning needs of a variety of nurses based on their personal and work commitments. The program includes self-directed study of web-based lessons supported by our e-learning platform Brightspace by Desire2Learn. A study schedule and regular communication with faculty will keep you on track with your studies.
Online discussions, exams, assignments, learning labs, perioperative simulations and interprofessional learning experiences are provided throughout the program and are used to develop competencies specific to the role of the perioperative nurse. Depending on the perioperative experience level of the LPN, clinical in an operating room setting maybe integrated throughout the program or done in blocks at designated times. Clinical learning experiences are partnered in operating rooms at hospitals across Nova Scotia. You will be matched with a designated preceptor who will supervise the clinical experience under the guidance of the PONP faculty.

Part time PONP-LPN
November 8, 2021 - May 9, 2022; Registration deadline October 4, 2021
This study option is designed for LPNs who will be working on their home nursing unit; or are currently employed or will be hired into the perioperative setting prior to, or during the program.
- Requires employer support to ensure learner success that includes time to participate in skill and simulation labs, exam writing, clinical, etc.

To be successful in this perioperative nursing program for LPNs, learners need:
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills

- Exceptional organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
- An ability to work under pressure and pay close attention to details
- Tolerance for a climate of constant change, fast-paced activities, and diverse responsibilities
- Excellent motor coordination and manual dexterity
- Physical stamina and the ability to stand for extended lengths of time
- Strong computer skills
General Program Information and Clinical Placements Requirements:
- Independent study time varies by study option - range is 7.5-15 hours per week
- Week-long skills lab intensive sessions x 2 held in Halifax
- Every effort is made to provide required clinical learning experiences at the site closest to the learner’s home; however, traveling might be required
- Preceptors supervise the clinical learning experiences under the guidance of PONP faculty
- LPNs with prior knowledge, skills, or experience fundamental to the practice of perioperative nursing may qualify to receive credit towards program requirements
Clinical Placements Requirements:
- An active-practicing LPN license with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search may be required before clinical placement
- Proof of up-to-date immunizations
- Health Care Providers enrolled in programs with clinical components are required to maintain their Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. The Learning Institute follows the Nova Scotia Health Code Blue/Pink Umbrella Policy, and requires a copy of your most recent certification on file. You will be provided with directions on how to submit documentation with your acceptance/welcome letter. If your BLS is going to expire during the program, faculty recommends you recertify prior to entering the program.
